Antagonistic teeth in human dentition build a strong functional unit (occlusion and mastication). In evolution, highly integrated (developmental) morphological patterns are expected to be objects of stabilizing selection.
The aim of my PhD project is to quantify and analyse molar EDJ morphology and morphological patterns of intra-individual, intra-population and among-population variation in modern humans. Major factors driving such variation patterns will be interpreted in an evolutionary-developmental context. Using methods of modern geometric morphometrics and high-throughput microCT, multivariate quantitative data will be acquired, processed and analysed.
